Type Locality and Naming

The type section lies by the highway from Dongfang to Jianbian Township on the west bank of the Changhua River, 4 km southeast of Dongfang County, Hainan Province. It was named by the Regional Geological Survey Party of Guangdong Bureau of Geology in 1964.


Lithology and Thickness

Claystone and Sandstone. A suite of epimetamorphic clastic rocks. Lower part is dominated by variegated slates (gray-white, light-gray, purple-red and gray-brown in color) and quartz sandstone, 368 m thick. Upper part is composed of gray-brown, dark-gray and purple-gray quartz sandstone and slate, intercalated with marble or limestone lenses; 136 m thick.

Lower contact

Disconformable contact with the underlying Devonian Yueling Gr (not in Devonian Lexicon)

Upper contact

Unknown: It is in faulted contact with the overlying Shitouling Fm

Fossils

Lower part contains abundant Brachiopods Orthotetes, Dictyoclostus, Linoproductus, Punctospirifer, Marginifera, etc.; Bivalves Palaeoneilo and Streblopteria; bryozoan Fenestella, Cephalopod Domatoceras, etc., belonging to littoral-neritic deposits of the Datangian Age.

Upper part is rich in Bivalves Myalina, Septimyalina, Phestia, Schizodus, Selenimyalina, Nuculopsis, Palaeoneilo, etc., Conodonts Neognathodus bassleri, N. deflexus, Streptognathodus oppletus, S. parvus and S. elegantulus, as well as brachiopods; being neritic deposits of the early Late Carboniferous (Xu Shouyong, 1992).
